The 'move away'

Postet av Adam og Eva Trondheim den 27. Feb 2014

Looking back over previous decades we can see obvious hair trends.

From the 70's mullet, the 80's perm, all the way to the 90's Jennifer Aniston cut.  People followed hair trends, and wanted something that was 'in'.  These mass trends engulfed the general population and people became clones of one another.

Today and over the past few years we have seen a 'move away' from mass trends, as people want to express their individuality and stand out from the crowd.

We see this ever more so in the model industry.  When models were previously restricted in showing any form of identity, almost a blank canvas for the clothes designer.  In the current model industry we see the likes of 'the Karlie cut', white blond washed hair and virvacious red heads walking the runways of Fashion Week 2014.  In complete contast taking control of,  and expressing their own individual style and identity rather than resembling the chosen homogenised look of the season.  And it seems to be working, models are recieving more attention and demand, as proven with Natalie Wrestling.  This season has seen her career explode, after switching from brunette to a super strong deep red block colour she has become the most talked about model of the season.

Personality is 'key', and indiviuality is paramount.  People dont want to blend in anymore, they want to express themselves and represent who they are as an individual.

Multiple award winning HOB Academy senior technical director says;

"Natalie Westlings new statement hair colour is a nod to the catwalk for Spring/Summer 2014’s art-school colour palettes. This bright paprika red shade is easy enough to achieve on natural hair but the maintenance of intensive tone is high.

This edgy, attention grabbing hair is for clients looking to be noticed but who also want to be seen as alternative. This shade is best suited to clients who have a pale, rosy complexion with a blue/green eye colour."

Guido Palau created this love it/hate it hair styling for the
Alexander McQueen A/W14 menswear show at London Fashion Week

Here is what he had to say about the inspiration
and concept behind the idea....

“I wanted the hair to be dark and sinister,” says Guido Palau of the Alexander McQueen A/W14 menswear show which took place earlier this week. Seasoned hair stylist for the house, he twisted crow’s feathers within each model’s matted hair, reminiscent of pagan mythology as they hung down over the face and stuck out at right angles. “I wasn’t too worried about the shape of the hair, I just wanted a great texture. The overall idea was to look quite dark and almost dirty. I didn’t want the feathers to be misconstrued as pretty.”

The show was a monochromatic display of military tailoring, heavy outerwear and Unitarian boots. “I was thinking of Adam and the Ants and Edward Scissorhands,” continues Palau. “It was a mismatch of those things. I liked the way feathers added a graphic element to the hair. It feels like dressing up but then it is still quite punky.”

For Giles Deacon hair was loosly swept across the forehead and face and flattened to the shape of the head;

For Christopher Kane hair was given a damp, tousled look by Guido Palau;

For Marc Jacobs, Guido Palau uses wigs cut into blunt symmetric bobs and colored with apricot, honey, hues and accessorized with pale pastel head bands to compliment the color;

For Donna Karan, Eugine Soleiman created a flat gelled circle around the head with the remaining hair pinned into a messy top-knot twist, a matt non-shine finish was used to create contrasting textures;

For Alexander Wang, Guido Palao plays with a futuristic look, smoothing hair across the forehead with a strong clean edge adding ultra high shine and securing the remaining hair into a super tight low side ponytail and tucked into the models collar;

For Jonathan Sanders Luke Hersheson styled hair across the forehead in heavily lacquered finger waves with high-shine securing lengths into a tight low central ponytail, giving a almost mannequin like feel to the models;
