Flying As A Hobby

Postet av Amin Cadie den 3. Jul 2016

This week, Kristin asked me to write about a hobby: so I decided to write about my passion for flying.

Since my first experience as a passenger when I was a child, I knew flying a plane would be a priority on my list as a hobby at least. I'm fascinated by the physics and engineering behind it too, so while growing up; I read as much as I could about aviation.

10 years ago: near my hometown Harrogate in North Yorkshire; I got in touch with a school called Multiflight at Leeds/Bradford International Airport and decided to start with flying lessons. The aircraft I'm using (pictured below) is a Robin HR200 single engine aircraft.

In August 2016 when I visit home I'm going to take an hour or two in a Cessna172 with my instructor and show my wife Marie the Yorkshire landscape from above (also pictured here); and I'll surprise her by serving on board her favourite: some "Kvikk Lunsj" chocolate and a carton of juice which is a treat in Norway usually when hiking or skiing.

Below are some pictures I took after a ground-check and shortly after take off:

Picture 1: Cockpit of the Robin HR200. This aircraft has a "joystick" rather than a full control column. All the vital instruments are displayed conveniently: Airspeed / Vertical speed / Altimeter (altitude reading) to name a few.

Picture 2: Shortly after take-off: North Yorkshire landscape

Picture 3: View from the windsreen of the cockpit

The Interview: Photographer Arne Vidar Stoltenberg

Postet av Amin Cadie den 31. Jan 2016

For this month's feature, I interviewed photography student: Arne Vidar Stoltenberg from Norsk Fotofagskole on location, (whom I will be collaborating with in the near future on a project)...

After a quick welcome when I arrive he laughs at the amount of snow covering me! Arne was about to start a photo shoot for an assignment and I was invited to see how he works with the camera. This was a nude-photography project where Arne had to illustrate the effect of light settings and how this plays an important role towards the final result of the image. Amongst the many intricate details that form a single image: contrast and intensity of light have a vital influence on shape and form.

After the shoot, we had a chat about Arne's journey through the world of film and photography education....

Q: When did you discover your passion for photography?

A: I started with a course in media communication, and it was the first fiction film project we worked on that helped me decide my educational route. I then worked as a technical apprentice for an independent Norwegian film company called 4 1/2 Film. It was there I decided that as much as I love the technicality, I wanted to also learn how to work with visually interpreting and communicating a story and theme.

Q: (Makes sense to me) So where did you go from 4 1/2 Film?

A: The crew at 4 1/2 Film taught me a lot, and I appreciate the experience that gave me. I decided to further my education by starting a course at NKH (Norsk Kreativ Høyskole) in film. There I learned a lot about the effects of lighting, amongst other important technical skills. I learned how to interpret a story using an artistic approach.

Q: How would you describe your photography style?

A: I like cinematic photography coming from a film background, so I want a picture to tell a story.

Q: (I like this approach) Describe your taste in fashion photography

A: Fashion is challenging. I like to have more than a plain background in the picture.. I still want the image to have detail and expression.

Q: What does inspiration mean to you?

A: Inspiration to me means admiring the creativity of others and learning from them, but not copying. At the end of the day as artists we are all individual and we should express our interpretation based on what we see and experience.

After the interview and tour of the Norsk Fotofagskole, we sat down to work on a mood-board to plan our photography project which I am looking very much forward to!

I leave the article with a final picture which illustrates an example of photography being approached in a context where the image will be used as a cover photo for a music LP. It has a subtle signature of Arne's taste in cinematic aproach.

Transparent Colours

Postet av Amin Cadie den 17. Nov 2015

For this test-picture courtesy of NKH Trondheim: I used our Redken Shades EQ range: 5+6+8KK. Then tied the hair up after drying. Transparent colours are a great way to enhance the natural shade and tone of the hair without leaving concentrated pigment traces like permanent colours do. The application and processing time is short and the price of this type of colouring enables you to experiment a little. So if you're unsure of a change, this is your safest option. Also this colour range is ammonia free.

The longevity of this colour depends on the type of hair you have, previous treatments, porosity and condition.

Art Imitates Life

Postet av Amin Cadie den 6. Nov 2015

It's a nice sunny autumn morning in Trondheim, so I decided to start the day by writing about where our work comes from. It is said that art imitates life and experiences.

Our work involves creating art for a persons image (for example); so there seems to be one formula behind an individual's creativity which emerges from their history, current mood, taste in artwork, music, and what is observed in general life. That's also why you will only connect with certain songs, pictures, scenery, artists and experiences. This explains why image and music work very well together as an example. Films use music to set the mood and interpret feelings.

Also the smallest intricate detail - not only the perfections, but also adorably charming imperfections can shape an image strongly. Personally, for me, I can appreciate what someone else would call a "flaw" on themselves. It gives them individuality.

I'm going to draw this short article to a close by sharing some of the work from one of my favourite artists and illustrators: Janusz Jurek from Poland who had an exhibition in London earlier this year.. I was amazed! These pictures are from the collection "Hairline".

On a final note, enjoy your weekend, and take a look around.. You'll be surprised by how much there is around you that you'll come to appreciate and draw inspiration from!!

Kind Regards, Amin Cadie (Art Director. Adam og Eva - Verftet/Trondheim)
